Become a certified PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor and turn your passion for diving into a full-time profession that changes lives. This is more than just a certification—it’s your passport to a lifestyle of adventure, purpose, and personal growth. If you’re ready to make a difference and build a career doing what you love, becoming a PADI Instructor is the next step.
The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) course is the final step in your professional training before becoming a fully certified dive instructor. It’s typically conducted as the second half of the Instructor Development Course (IDC), following the Assistant Instructor portion. If you’re already a certified Assistant Instructor, you can go straight into the OWSI segment.
This intensive and rewarding course prepares you to teach all core PADI programs—from Discover Scuba Diving through Divemaster—and includes both academic development and hands-on training.
Throughout the course, you'll be evaluated on your ability to conduct classroom presentations, confined water teaching scenarios, and open water evaluations with real or simulated students.
Upon successful completion, you’ll be eligible to attend the PADI Instructor Examination (IE)—a standardized two-day evaluation conducted by a PADI examiner. Passing the IE earns you the prestigious title of PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.
This course isn’t just about passing an exam—it’s about becoming a confident, competent, and inspiring leader in the diving community.
Before your in-person sessions begin, you’ll complete the PADI IDC eLearning, which lays the foundation for your success as a dive educator. This flexible, self-paced online course lets you study at home or on the go, using any device.
You’ll cover essential topics such as:
This online portion is designed to maximize your time in the classroom and water by preparing you in advance with key knowledge and teaching concepts.
Pro Tip:
If you haven’t already completed Dive Theory Online, now’s the time! This companion course reviews dive physics, physiology, equipment, skills, and the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP). Completing Dive Theory Online in advance can exempt you from the theory exam during your IDC, making your path to the Instructor Examination smoother and less stressful.
