During the PADI Assistant Instructor course, candidates undergo a structured training program that equips them with the skills needed to assist in teaching PADI courses and take on instructional responsibilities under the supervision of a PADI Instructor. Here’s a breakdown of what typically happens during the course:
Academic Training: Candidates engage in classroom sessions where they learn about PADI standards, teaching methods, learning principles, and the business of diving. They also enhance their theoretical knowledge of scuba diving to ensure they can effectively teach student divers.
Teaching Presentations: Participants are required to prepare and conduct teaching presentations in the classroom and in confined water (like a swimming pool). These presentations help develop their ability to organize and deliver course content clearly and effectively.
Skills Assessment: The course includes a thorough assessment of the candidate’s diving skills and rescue techniques. They must perform these skills to demonstration quality, showing their ability to model proper practices for student divers.
Workshops and Practical Application: Workshops on various topics such as risk management, customer service, and PADI procedures are conducted. Candidates also participate in practical sessions where they learn how to manage actual training scenarios, both in confined and open water settings.
Evaluation: Throughout the course, candidates are evaluated on their knowledge development presentations, confined water teaching presentations, and ability to handle open water training scenarios with real or simulated students.
Certification: Upon successful completion of all assessments and meeting all performance requirements, candidates are certified as PADI Assistant Instructors. This certification allows them to teach certain PADI programs independently and assist in a broader range of PADI courses under the supervision of a PADI Instructor.
The course is intensive but rewarding, offering a significant step forward for those looking to pursue a career in dive instruction.
PADI's eLearning option that lets you study independently at your own pace before class. There are nine interactive knowledge development sections. Pre-study online saves classroom time, which allows more time for practicing the skills that distinguish you as a PADI Instructor.
Also, sign up for Dive Theory Online, if you haven't already completed it or it's been more than a year since you went through it. The program is a straightforward review of dive physics, physiology, skills, equipment and environment, plus using the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP). By successfully completing Dive Theory Online, you can get credit for the dive theory exam requirement during your IDC.
You'll be able to organize and present information, conduct skill development sessions and control open water dives. Basically, you become a better public speaker and get really good at demonstrating skills while watching out for student diver safety. Key topics include:
